A sidelong glance, a tilt of the head, eyes that stare dully back at the viewer –these gestures are what brings Tang’s paintings to life. Their world is a dream world, where dark, cloud-like forms bring a sense of impending disaster or can be clutched onto for comfort. The figures themselves, with their misshapen heads, animal-like ears and half-formed limbs are also like apparitions out of the subconscious. And yet, in a haunted look in the eyes or the way a cigarette is held between two fingers, we catch glimpses of ourselves in our myriad anxieties.
Is there truth in these paintings? Meaning? I honestly don’t know. But what I would say is that these People Who Can’t Be Named represent an experience, an act on the part of the viewer. By recognizing our own humanity in the woman with the missing arms or the man with the Mickey Mouse ears, the experience becomes, perhaps uncomfortably, something similar to that of looking the mirror.
